Perception vs. Reality

I completed a quick search of perception vs reality and came across this picture.  Even though this image is not a person, but food, it perfectly sums up the concept of perception vs reality within one image.  Perception vs reality is a concept that is often thought about but not necessarily discussed.  Typically it seems as if people aren't happy with their body image and their perception is an attractive, thin good looking person.  In the case of this image it's the perception of having a big juicy looking hamburger compared to what it actually looks like when you get it.  Perception vs. reality can go in many different directions, whether it be food, landmarks or people.  It's quite common that the perception always looks or seems better because reality to many is just not good enough and people can't be satisfied with everything.

When I think more about perception and reality, it makes me think deeper into unsatisfactory standards within people and why exactly this is a problem.  Looking into different peoples perceptions is a visual and mental stimulation because it's not something that is shared with everyone and is almost a mystery. There is a sense of the unknown because what people may see themselves as can differ quite a bit from what reality is.  Looking more into perceptions deeper than just the exterior would be visually different and would dig deeper into the elements of perception vs. reality.

  1. Weirdly enough I almost posted the same image on my blog entry too. But i really like how you talk about body image because i think it relates not only to the picture but also to the topic. I think that many people do have problems with how they view their own body. Not only do people see things that are ment to be seen as reality such as models, but are actually not reality at all they are usually photoshoped. This too brings up the idea oh what reality actually is, and how do we know if something is really real or not when the media is trying to get us to think that things are real when they are in fact not.

  2. I like how you said it is the unsatisfactory standards within people that plays with perceptions and reality. This is exactly what it is. It is how we see ourselves and our reactions to this compared to what we feel like these images should be. I think knowing this, the project will make for a great commentary at the notions we posess.

  3. Kim I enjoy how you brought Kelsey's theme into a new light. Instead of people, you showed food. If you read Sarah's blog on this topic, I think both of you do a great job in showing what different kinds of paths Kelsey could potentially take for her series of works.

  4. I think it was a good idea to show a different side to perception vs. reality by using food, especially McDonald's because they spend so much money on advertising their products to look a certain way and they certainly don't look like the images you see on TV when you get them home. You could probably pay the national debt of some small countries with the money that McDonald's spends on advertising and marketing annually and most of it is done with artificial food that is made to look like real food. Sadly enough we keep going back even though it's a let down every time; honestly, when is the last time you really enjoyed any of their food?

  5. I really liked that you brought the idea of food as an advertisement into this theme of Perception vs. Reality. They all want you to buy their food, yet most of the time the food they take images of aren't what they really look like or are completely fake. You brought forth a different view of Perception vs. Reality, other than the human perception.
